Hall of Fame quarterback Troy Aikman appeared at a Dallas event on Wednesday night alongside Peter King, in connection with King’s new book, The Game. During the session, Aikman addressed whether he would call NFL games in 2027 and acknowledged the uncertainty surrounding his broadcasting role.
Citing veteran sports journalist Tim Cowlishaw, Aikman said there is a “50-50 chance” he will not be working in television next year.
The outlook seems realistic. Aikman’s contract expires after the Super Bowl, and he has been outspoken about his frustration with ESPN’s lack of interest in negotiating an extension.
If he leaves ESPN, potential destinations are limited. CBS has already named J.J. Watt as Tony Romo’s replacement, leaving an opening for Aikman only if Prime Video decides to buy out Kirk Herbstreit and pursue him instead.
Not surprisingly, Aikman has also discussed a possible transition to the Cowboys’ front office. He has expressed interest in an executive position, and his consulting role with the Dolphins may be an early step in a shift similar to those made by Matt Millen and John Lynch.
