The Trump administration has proposed a major policy shift to lift long-standing restrictions on logging and road construction in U.S. national forests, aiming to balance economic development with forest management. This initiative seeks to repeal the 2001 “roadless rule,” which had protected over 60 million acres of wilderness for 25 years.
The plan, spearheaded by the U.S. Forest Service, would allow logging and infrastructure development on nearly 45 million acres, including the Tongass National Forest in Alaska. This move follows President Trump’s emphasis on increasing timber production and thinning forests to mitigate wildfire risks, as emphasized by Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins in a recent statement.
The proposal has sparked significant debate. Environmental groups argue it threatens biodiversity, water sources, and climate resilience, while industry advocates claim it will boost economic activity in rural areas. Experts have raised concerns that introducing roads in remote areas could paradoxically increase fire risks by facilitating human activity.
The Tongass National Forest, previously restored under the Biden administration, now faces renewed logging pressures. Environmentalists warn this could endanger old-growth ecosystems and watersheds critical for drinking water. Advocacy organizations are expected to challenge the policy in court.
Supporters of the rule changes, including Republican lawmakers, emphasize its potential to improve wildfire response times and economic opportunities. Montana’s Governor Greg Gianforte highlighted how federal restrictions have limited forest management in his state. However, ecologists argue that modern fire mitigation strategies, such as prescribed burns, are more effective than road expansions.
The Forest Service will accept public feedback before finalizing the rule, which is anticipated to be published in the Federal Register soon. This proposal marks a significant departure from previous conservation efforts, reflecting the administration’s broader policy shift toward resource utilization over preservation.
