Judd Trump defeated Si Jiahui 5-2 to book a place in the Shenzhen Open quarter-finals, where he will face Mark Selby in one of the tournament’s most compelling ties.
The world No. 2 produced a controlled performance with breaks of 80, 71, 53 and 54, although his win over China’s Si was briefly unsettled by an unexpected issue involving the LED advertising board behind the table.
In the seventh frame, after Si missed the yellow, Trump potted the same ball into the top-right pocket just as a blue flash from the screen appeared in his line of sight. He reacted with visible frustration, but quickly regained his focus before clearing the remaining colours to secure the frame.
“At this stage there’s always a crucial ball or crucial frame,” Trump said.
“So far this season and maybe last season I have not been winning those. But that can change at any point – you have just got to keep putting yourself in those positions.”
Mark Selby, the four-time world champion who lifted the China Open title in August, reached the last eight with a 5-3 victory over Stephen Maguire. The Englishman recorded a top break of 99 in the match.
The quarter-final stage also set up another major encounter, with Wu Yize, who beat Ricky Walden 5-3, due to face Shaun Murphy in a rematch of their Crucible final earlier in May.
Murphy, who had already secured a 5-1 win over Elliot Slessor, advanced with authority. Yuan Sijun also reached the last eight after a 5-2 win over Zak Surety, while Jimmy Robertson moved through with a commanding 5-0 victory against Scott Donaldson.
Chris Wakelin took the other side of the draw with a 5-2 win over Neil Robertson, and Michael Holt completed the quarter-final field by beating Kyren Wilson 5-2. Holt compiled a break of 126 en route to his first ranking-event quarter-final since the UK Championship in 2024.
