President Donald Trump launched a sharp attack on Sunday against Washington, D.C.’s presumptive next mayor, labeling her a communist who would ruin the capital, even as he highlighted ambitious federal building projects including the renovation of a golf course.
In a Truth Social post, Trump stated he would meet with Janeese Lewis George, who won the Democratic mayoral primary on Tuesday, effectively securing victory in November’s general election in the heavily Democratic city.
Trump warned he would not allow the District — which he claimed to have transformed into a “Safe and Prestigious Community” through the deployment of National Guard troops — to “be destroyed by a Communist adherent.”
The president has recently escalated his use of the term “communist” to describe political opponents, including referring to three Democratic primary winners in New York City backed by Mayor Zohran Mamdani as “godless communists.”
Like Mamdani, Lewis George identifies as a democratic socialist, not a communist.
In a second lengthy post, Trump touted steps his administration has taken to beautify Washington, including resurfacing the Reflecting Pool’s bottom with an “American flag blue” coating typically used in swimming pools.
Since its installation, however, the coating has begun to peel and algae has turned the water green — a recurring issue over the years.
