South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster has designated Darline Graham Nordone to assume her late brother Lindsey Graham’s United States Senate responsibilities, following President Donald Trump’s endorsement of her appointment.

The appointment finalized Monday preserves the Republican Party’s 53-seat senatorial majority within the 100-member chamber. Nordone will serve through January 3, completing the remainder of Graham’s term.

The incoming interim senator lacks conventional political experience but has participated in political engagements alongside her late brother, including his 2016 presidential campaign activities.

During Monday’s announcement, she indicated her tenure would continue her brother’s initiatives, referencing his positions on Israel’s defense and counter-Iran operations through the Israel-US collaboration framework.

“I pledge to dedicate myself fully over the coming months to uphold President Trump’s objectives while advancing Senator Graham’s legacy serving South Carolina and national interests,” Nordone declared.

Her candidacy for the full Senate term remains uncertain following the announcement. Republican primaries scheduled for next month will determine Graham’s party nominee for the November general election against Democrat Annie Andrews, a pediatrician.

President Trump publicly supported Nordone’s appointment via his Truth Social platform Monday, stating: “I advised Governor Henry McMaster to appoint Lindsey Graham’s outstanding sister, Darline, as South Carolina’s interim Senator. This honors a cherished figure who held her brother in highest regard!”

Lindsey Graham, who passed away Saturday at age 71, had previously endorsed Nordone’s potential political involvement during his 2016 campaign: “Were she to assume governmental responsibilities, she would exemplify American values through exceptional service,” he remarked.

Nordone endured significant childhood hardships following parental loss, with her late brother assuming a crucial caregiving role during her adolescence.

Governor McMaster expressed heartfelt appreciation for the late senator while announcing Nordone’s appointment: “Lindsey provided vital support to his sister across crucial life stages. I’m honored to ask his sister Darline to fulfill his Senate duties temporarily,” he said.
