President Donald Trump announced Friday that he is barring CNN, MSNBC, and Politico from the White House, citing unfavorable coverage, and warned that additional media bans could follow.
In a post on his social media platform, Trump declared the ban effective immediately, stating he was excluding the outlets “as a result of their constant ‘reporting’ FAKE NEWS!”
Later, while in the Oval Office, Trump asserted his authority to exclude journalists, saying, “I think that somebody has a right to keep them away if they’re going to write false stories all the time.”
The move represents the administration’s latest challenge to First Amendment protections.
The action follows Trump’s February 2025 decision to restrict Associated Press journalists from the Oval Office, Air Force One, and other events, in retaliation for the news organization’s refusal to adopt his preferred name for the Gulf of Mexico.
The AP has filed suit, and the case remains ongoing.
Trump has historically opposed coverage he deems unfavorable and has frequently sued news organizations or attacked reporters on social media and in person.
Since returning to office, Trump has pursued legal action against The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, the BBC, and other outlets.
It is extremely rare for a US president to ban news organizations from the White House entirely, though Trump did ban a CNN reporter during his first term and Richard Nixon restricted the Washington Post during the Watergate scandal.
