US President Donald Trump criticized Norway during a recent campaign rally in Port Huron, Michigan, suggesting that immigrants from the country are unwelcome due to its lack of recognition toward him through the Nobel Peace Prize.
- Trump referred to Norway as a “shit house” country—a label he has previously used for Haiti, Libya, Somalia, and Yemen.
- “I didn’t get the Nobel Prize… so I don’t want anybody from Norway,” he stated to supporters at the event.
The rally took place ahead of next week’s midterm elections, where Trump continued to voice strong opinions on immigration. He attributed recent unrest in France to immigration policies and suggested that while some nationalities might be acceptable for entry into the U.S., Norwegian immigrants are not due to his personal grievance regarding the Nobel Committee based in Oslo.
Despite these remarks, there was no official change announced by the Trump administration regarding immigration policies related to Norway. Economic data from the International Monetary Fund shows Norway remains one of the world’s wealthiest nations by GDP per capita, with its sovereign wealth fund reporting a record profit of 1.75 trillion Norwegian crowns ($184.3 billion) in the first half of 2026.
Norway’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and representatives from the Norwegian Nobel Committee have yet to respond publicly to the president’s comments made outside normal business hours.
