Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to meet President Donald Trump at the upcoming Group of 7 summit, following recent U.S. military strikes on commercial vessels in the Gulf of Oman that resulted in the deaths of three Indian sailors, complicating bilateral relations.
While Modi may aim to stabilize ties, the challenge is significant: Addressing concerns from a nation grappling with economic strain due to U.S. sanctions on Russian oil and reduced Gulf crude supplies, which have pushed India toward a fuel crisis. Negotiations for a trade agreement remain unresolved, despite incremental progress such as a critical minerals deal finalized during Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s recent visit.
The Gulf of Oman attacks deepened tensions, with India lodging a formal protest while opposition leaders criticized the government for inadequate response. Rahul Gandhi, head of the Congress Party, accused Modi of being an “obedient servant” to Trump amid growing domestic backlash.
Since their last meeting in February 2025, U.S.-India relations have faced turbulence under Trump’s administration, including aggressive trade policies, immigration reforms affecting Indian nationals, and disputes over Middle East diplomacy. Analysts warn that New Delhi’s strategic autonomy—prioritizing self-reliance while maintaining global partnerships—has resurged as trust in U.S. alignment wavers.
Amid these challenges, India has pursued diversified alliances, including agreements with the European Union and renewed dialogue with China, signaling a pivot away from overreliance on any single partner. Atul Keshap, president of the U.S.-India Business Council, emphasized the need to prioritize shared interests like digital technology and nuclear energy to rebuild momentum.
While expectations for concrete outcomes at the G7 meeting are muted, its symbolic significance endures. “It’s vital that our democracies remain aligned,” Keshap noted, underscoring the importance of sustained diplomatic engagement beyond public optics.
