US President Donald Trump announced on Thursday that Lake Ontario will be renamed “Lake America” within the United States, escalating his ongoing trade dispute with Canada.
The president signed an executive order to update the lake’s designation within the US geographic naming system. However, Trump lacks the authority to compel Canada to adopt his preferred naming conventions.
This action mirrors his previous attempt last year to rebrand the Gulf of Mexico as the “Gulf of America.”
The signing took place at the Resolute Desk in the Oval Office, where a large sign displayed a map of the Great Lakes. The map prominently featured the words “Lake America” in red letters over Lake Ontario.
In response to reporters, Trump characterized Canada as “the worst” partner on trade, asserting, “They feel entitled, and we can’t have that.”
The proposal has gained traction in recent days, following the US announcement of 50 percent tariffs on $20 billion worth of Canadian goods after bilateral negotiations collapsed over the weekend.
