U.S. President Donald Trump announced the suspension of key Russian sanctions, citing the need to maintain diplomatic engagement with Moscow in the ongoing Ukraine conflict.

In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump emphasized his commitment to advancing peace negotiations, stating he aims to avoid actions that could push Russia away from the bargaining table.

The decision to suspend multiple Russia-related sanctions occurred just before their scheduled implementation, amid rising tensions with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

Zelensky, in an interview with NBC News, cautioned that aligning with Russian President Vladimir Putin would constitute a “historic mistake” for Ukraine’s sovereignty and security.

Russian diplomatic representative Kirill Dmitriev hailed Trump’s move as a “historic moment,” asserting that the sanctions would have weakened U.S. economic and market stability.

Trump further criticized Zelensky, claiming the Ukrainian leader lacks genuine intent to conclude the war and accusing him of squandering a chance for a deal two years prior.

Zelensky has consistently advocated for a ceasefire and attributed Russia’s reluctance to negotiate to President Vladimir Putin’s refusal to accept peace terms since the 2022 invasion.

Relations between the U.S. and Ukraine have strained following recent Washington-Moscow energy deals, with Ukraine accusing the Trump administration of reducing critical military aid to Kyiv.

At a recent EU summit, Zelensky praised “real leaders” in response to Trump’s public criticism, which labeled him “more difficult to engage with” than Putin.
