Immigration and Customs Enforcement has been accused of conducting aggressive enforcement operations since President Trump returned to office, leading to at least 21 shootings since March. Two recent fatalities—Salgado Araujo in Houston and Joan Sebastian Guerrero in Biddeford, Maine—have sparked public outcry and prompted the agency to temporarily suspend most traffic stops.
In response to the controversy, Trump posted on Truth Social, commending ICE agents as “doing a GREAT job” and urging the reinstatement of traffic stops as a critical crime‑fighting tool. He emphasized the need for strength and toughness in immigration enforcement but offered no condolences to the victims’ families.
The Houston incident involved ICE agents shooting Araujo in his vehicle; the Department of Homeland Security said he attempted to weaponize the car, a claim disputed by passengers. In Maine, agents shot Guerrero after he allegedly attempted to flee; his family says he was legally residing in the U.S. and leaves behind a wife and child.
