US President Donald Trump made a major statement on Wednesday during a high-profile meeting at the White House with top executives from the cryptocurrency, prediction markets, and artificial intelligence sectors. The pronouncements from America’s leader sent significant ripples across the market, triggering a sharp rally that wiped out nearly $3 billion in crypto positions in just 24 hours.
$2.74 Billion Shorts in Crypto Wrecked
Short positions bore the brunt of the market upheaval, accounting for $2.74 billion of the total liquidations, according to data from Coinglass. Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum (ETH) shorts suffered the most severe losses, representing approximately $1.37 billion and $1.02 billion of the wipe-outs, respectively.
On-chain data indicates that the ensuing volatility wiped out over 171,722 traders during the period. The largest single liquidation order was recorded on the Hyperliquid (HYPE) decentralized exchange (DEX), where a single BTC-USD trading pair liquidation reached $48.8 million.
Trump Rallies Support for CLARITY Act
A primary focus of Trump’s meeting was consolidating support for the pending Digital Asset Market CLARITY Act in Congress, which is scheduled for a cloture vote in mid-September. The president emphasized that the bill is vital to ensuring the United States remains at the forefront of emerging technologies, including digital assets, prediction markets, and artificial intelligence (AI).
The president asserted that the nation stands at the “very beginning of a revolution” in finance, highlighting that supporting this momentum has the potential to create jobs, opportunity, and wealth for all Americans. Trump described the CLARITY Act as “very powerful structured legislation” designed to keep the US ahead of China and other global competitors.
Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) Chair Paul Atkins and Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) Chair Michael Selig also attended the event. Both regulators stated they will continue pursuing measures to bring regulatory clarity to the crypto space, regardless of the CLARITY Act’s legislative outcome. However, they reiterated that comprehensive legislation remains the preferred path to ensure long-term market certainty and achieve the goal of establishing the US as the “crypto capital of the world.”
The White House event was attended by top executives from major industry players, including Coinbase, Gemini, Ripple, Robinhood Markets, Payward, Chainlink (LINK), Paradigm, Kalshi, and the Digital Chamber, among others.
US Considering Buying Bitcoin and Other Crypto Assets
The primary catalyst behind the market’s sharp rally—with Bitcoin surging from roughly $64,100 to $70,000—was Trump’s revelation that the administration had been engaging in discussions with regulators regarding the potential for the US to purchase Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies.
“But it’s certainly been talked about,” Trump remarked during the press conference, adding that such discussions have taken significant pressure off the US dollar.
Furthermore, Trump confirmed that the CFTC is actively working to bring the leading perpetual decentralized exchange, Hyperliquid, to the US market. Currently, Hyperliquid dominates the perpetual DEX sector, with its 24-hour trading volume surpassing $18.38 billion and open interest exceeding $12.12 billion, according to CoinGecko data.
