Following a reflection on the match’s pivotal moments, Tuchel stated he felt “the same way—that we were too passive” during the final 35 minutes.
“If you’re asking whether I regret my choices, the answer is no,” he added.
“I believed momentum shifted during the game, and I aimed to support my team…”
“I made several decisions guided by instinct, intuition, and experience, prioritizing competitiveness to secure a result. Though we fell short…”
“I acknowledge responsibility for these decisions. I’d regret not intervening. I’d regret not responding.”
Tuchel declined to engage in assigning blame.
“No issue,” he said. “That’s part of the role, but I won’t participate.
“There’s no one to fault. If accountability is needed, I accept it as the head coach.”
When questioned about Kane’s deep positioning in the latter stages, Tuchel clarified: “Why?” He added,
“That’s standard in a defensive setup. We weren’t sufficiently proactive.”
Tuchel noted Argentina “maintained strong momentum after our goal,” adding
“They implemented offensive changes and advanced into strategic positions.”
“We failed to intercept crosses and runners into the box.”
“To address this, we adopted a back five formation, expanded width, and positioned ourselves closer to the crossing players.”
“Eventually, we became overly passive, and Argentina regained rhythm.”
“We faced the reigning world champions in the semifinal.”
“Leading 1-0 at 85 minutes, we conceded to the world’s top player, which was painful.”
Pressed about data on England’s diminished physical output compared to earlier matches, Tuchel conceded: “Even if it feels like an excuse, altitudes in Mexico and Miami’s heat against Norway likely impacted us more than anticipated.”
“Players exerted maximum effort in every game. If data reveals a drop, there must be a valid cause—motivation remains unchanged.”
