KYIV — Russian drone strikes killed two civilians on Sunday, officials reported, as global leaders convened in London to intensify pressure on Moscow over its four‑year war.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is scheduled to meet the heads of France, Germany and the United Kingdom on Sunday to discuss the next steps for Ukraine, which has been experiencing a series of military setbacks.
In the southern Zaporizhzhia region, a 56‑year‑old minibus driver was killed when a Russian drone struck his vehicle, the State Emergency Service of Ukraine said on Telegram.
In the central Dnipropetrovsk region, a 59‑year‑old man died during a separate assault that involved drones and aerial bombs over two districts, according to regional military chief Oleksandr Ganzha on Telegram. The attack also wounded a 35‑year‑old man and caused infrastructure damage.
Analysis by the Institute for the Study of War shows Ukraine reclaimed more territory in May than it lost to Russian forces, marking the second consecutive month of net gains.
Russia’s offensive has contributed to soaring prices, tax increases, record‑high borrowing costs, business closures and labour shortages, creating the toughest economic conditions since the full‑scale invasion began in February 2022.
Zelensky proposed a direct meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in an open letter, expressing willingness to negotiate a “full ceasefire.”
At Russia’s flagship economic forum, Putin dismissed claims of a collapsing economy, stating, “We have descended to the same level at which Eurozone countries have been experiencing growth for the past few years.”
