Bolivian Defence Minister Ernesto Justiniano confirmed at least 58 injuries following a pyrotechnic material explosion at an artillery regiment barracks in Viacha, approximately 30km from La Paz, around 14:30 local time on Friday. Health official Rita Nebraska told Reuters between 10 and 15 people are believed to have died in the incident, though authorities fear the final death toll could be higher. Police reported dozens of homes damaged, largely from shattered windows, while emergency workers continue searching the rubble. Minister Justiniano warned of a risk of further explosions and urged residents to stay at least 150 metres from the military base. Police spokesman Roger Roca told AFP that fireworks had been stored at the barracks, and the cause of the blast remains under investigation. Viacha’s authorities have declared three days of mourning.
