Two Injured Hospitalized After Oregon Elementary Shooting; Suspect Dead
A shooting has left several victims at an elementary school in Northwestern Oregon, officials reported Thursday, and have confirmed that the gunman has been killed.
“We have not yet identified the shooter. It may have been a bystander. At this time there are multiple victims,” said Sheila Miller, a spokesperson for the Bend Police Department during a press briefing.
The Bend‑La Pine School District officially declared the facility to be under lockdown.
Later updates indicated that law‑enforcement was transporting students in buses to a separate venue so families could reunite.
Officer Miller noted that units responded to the critical scene at 1:00 pm local time and reached the area within about two minutes.
“Secondly, word came over the radio that the suspect was down,” she added.
Emergency responders carried at least two survivors to a nearby hospital, stating that their condition is unknown.
The school lies more than 100 miles southeast of Portland and educates kindergarten through fifth‑grade learners.
In a nation where firearm availability is widespread, gun violence remains a persistent crisis, claiming thousands of lives each year and ranking the United States as having the highest per‑capita deaths among developed countries.
The deadliest such incident in U.S. history occurred at Virginia Tech on April 16, 2007, when South Korean student Seung‑Hui Cho killed 32 individuals and injured 17 before committing suicide.
To date, more than 360 mass shootings have unfolded across the United States this year, according to the Gun Violence Archive, which defines a mass shooting as involving four or more victims.
