Tyrrell Hatton surged into a two-stroke lead after the second round of LIV Golf Andalucia in Valderrama, Spain, following a steady 2-under-par 69 on Friday.
Playing at the Real Club Valderrama—the historic site of the 1997 Ryder Cup—the 34-year-old Englishman highlighted his round with a spectacular eagle on the par-5 17th, alongside three birdies, to offset three bogeys.
Now sitting at 6-under par for the event, Hatton holds a narrow advantage over Belgium’s Thomas Detry, who carded a 70 on Friday.
“To be honest, if you had told me on Wednesday that I’d be leading by two shots heading into the weekend, I probably wouldn’t have believed you,” Hatton admitted. “I felt my warmup was effective, which allowed me to simplify my approach. I feel like I’ve hit some really quality shots.”
Hatton acknowledged that the course remained challenging throughout the day. “It was a tricky day; even when you hit a good shot, it was still easy to miss the green. I’m happy with my current form and hope to maintain this momentum through the weekend.”
The Englishman noted that his front nine was “pretty frustrating,” and a bogey on the 10th hole threatened his progress before a strong turnaround starting at the 11th.
“Birdieing the 11th, followed by a great up-and-down on 12 and a crucial putt on 13, really shifted the momentum in my favor,” Hatton said. “The eagle on 17 was definitely a highlight and a great bonus.”
Hatton’s individual success has also bolstered Legion XIII, who currently hold a two-shot lead in the team standings. Legion XIII posted a 5-under total on Friday to move to 3-under overall, leading ahead of Ripper GC and 4Aces GC, who are both tied at 1-under.
Meanwhile, Thomas Detry saw a remarkable bogey-free streak of 32 holes come to an end, dropping two shots over his final four holes on Friday.
“It’s a grind out there,” Detry remarked. “It’s disappointing to leak two shots on 15 and 18, but I feel my game is in a very strong position for the fifth consecutive week.”
Zimbabwe’s Scott Vincent shot a 72 on Friday, landing in a four-way tie for third place at 3-under par. Defending champion Talor Gooch climbed the leaderboard with a strong 67, joining Vincent, Spain’s Sergio Garcia (70), and Australia’s Cam Smith (70) in the tie.
Gooch’s round was punctuated by an eagle on the 11th hole, finishing the day with five birdies and three bogeys.
