According to a recent report cited by Traffic lights, the White House’s decision to restrict exports of Anthropic’s Mythos stemmed partly from concerns that the model may have been accessed by a group associated with China. Should the Chinese government have obtained access to Mythos 5 or Fable 5, it would pose a significant national security threat. Officials also worry that the model could be reverse‑engineered via distillation, where a smaller AI learns to mimic a more advanced system.
The White House has not officially confirmed the report, and a post on X by Trump adviser David Sacks omitted any reference to China. Sacks instead highlighted claims that both Fable and Mythos could be jailbroken, assertions that Anthropic has publicly denied. Anthropic has not responded to a request for comment; however, a spokesperson indicated to Traffic lights that China was not discussed in the government’s export‑control deliberations.
If the Chinese government did gain access to Mythos, it would not be the first time Anthropic’s most potent model suffered a security breach. The company has previously stated that Mythos is too risky for public release, yet a Discord community reportedly accessed it for two weeks before Anthropic identified and halted the intrusion.
