WASHINGTON, June 29 (Reuters) – The United States announced that a high‑level meeting on Iran will take place in Doha on Tuesday, with President Donald Trump’s top envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner attending. Technical discussions will also continue at the sidelines.
In a Monday social‑media post, Trump said that Iran had requested a meeting, to be held in the Qatari capital, though he offered no further details. Moments later, his press secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed on Fox News that both Witkoff and Kushner would travel to Doha for the talks.
“Special Envoy Witkoff and Jared Kushner will be flying to Doha for high‑level meetings this week as we continue to discuss the memorandum of understanding. On the sidelines of those high‑level talks, technical dialogues will occur,” Leavitt said. She added, “We are upholding our end of the ceasefire. Violence will be met with violence.”
The U.S. and Iran signed a 14‑point memorandum of understanding on June 17 to end four months of conflict. The accord commits both sides to cease hostilities and reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway for about one‑fifth of global oil and liquefied natural gas shipments.
However, recent exchange of strikes threatened to jeopardize the fragile agreement. After an Iranian projectile struck a cargo vessel in the strait on Thursday, the U.S. and Iran have accused each other of violating the interim ceasefire, leading to several days of retaliatory actions.
Leavitt told the “Fox & Friends” program that the United States has responded to attacks on commercial vessels and will continue to do so. She expressed hope that further violence would cease, noting that the president is eager to see the peace process succeed.
