IRVINE, Calif. – The U.S. men’s national team’s extensive preparation for the World Cup has featured numerous storylines, including professional opportunities and personal events. As the opening match against Paraguay approaches on Friday, the initially upbeat atmosphere of the camp has transitioned into a more focused, businesslike environment. The primary concern that had persisted despite the team’s buoyant demeanor, reminiscent of the bright Southern California sun, has now been resolved.
Chris Richards, widely regarded as one of the most indispensable players on the U.S. squad for this World Cup, has returned to the field and confirmed that he will be ready to line up at SoFi Stadium in two days.
He stated on Wednesday during his first media appearance since joining USMNT camp on May 29, “I am prepared. As this is a World Cup, I have made every effort to ensure I am ready. I feel fit, although there is a slight amount of swelling, which can be managed with tape.”
Richards sustained an ankle injury on May 17 while playing for Crystal Palace and has been sidelined since, missing his club’s final two matches of the season — including the UEFA Conference League final against Rayo Vallecano on May 27 in Leipzig, Germanywhich they won. He also missed the U.S. team’s 3-2 victory over Senegal on May 31 and their 2-1 defeat to Germany on Saturday. He participated in a full training session on Monday, focusing intensively on preparing for Friday’s match.
“When I first sustained the injury, I felt deeply disappointed and feared the worst,” he explained. “The moment I received the diagnosis, I began to relax. After the match, my ankle had swollen significantly, and I left the field in a boot. Once the diagnosis was confirmed, I thought, ‘Cool. Whatever it takes, I must be ready for this first game.'”
Richards’ teammates have witnessed his recovery, waiting ten days since his arrival at the U.S. Soccer National Training Center in Fayetteville, Georgia, before they could finally train together.
“He has done everything necessary to be in peak condition heading into this week and prepare for the opening match,” said Mark McKenziewho could start alongside him at center back on Friday. “Seeing his dedication in person, the work he has put in — both on the field with performance coaches to expose the ankle to various movements and off the field with a comprehensive recovery regimen — has been impressive. He is utilizing every available modality, even some unfamiliar ones, to ensure he is as fit as possible for the game.”
Although head coach Mauricio Pochettino expressed frustration about being out of the loop regarding Richards’ injury status on Friday, noting that the staff had limited information from Palace, Richards indicated that the progression of the injury unfolded as anticipated.
“Ankles can be somewhat unpredictable,” he remarked. “Crystal Palace hoped I might be available for the Conference League final, which I understand given its importance. It took me two days to travel here, and the situation may have been amplified during the flight, but I anticipated this outcome. Having experienced an ankle injury previously, there were no major setbacks — mainly swelling that required time to subside and assessment on the pitch, which can sometimes take longer than expected.”
Richards indicated that he finally felt comfortable last week, after participating in individual sessions near the squad and later engaging in ball work with his teammates.
“He stated that he first felt fully prepared for Friday sometime last week,” he said. “The extensive use of massages, ice, and compression helped, and when he finally returned to the pitch, it felt positive. He reiterated that he can compete through pain as long as his function is optimal, which remains the priority.”
Pochettino and his staff will ultimately make the final decision, but Richards clarified that he has not been informed of any minute restrictions or limitations that would restrict him to select matches due to fitness concerns.
‘I would not put myself in a position where I doubted my ability to perform at 100%,’ he said. ‘The staff has not communicated any restrictions. If I am making myself available, they can trust me to play at full capacity. I have completed full practices in recent days, and the intensity of those sessions has been evident. I have experienced no adverse reactions, which reinforces my confidence in what lies ahead.'”
Richards hopes the ankle injury will not impede his participation in the World Cup, and the U.S. roster is expected to remain unchanged for now, although national teams may adjust lineups up to 24 hours before their opening match due to fitness concerns. The center back had every incentive to exert maximum effort, not only because he missed the 2022 World Cup in Qatar due to injury.
‘Not only is this a World Cup, but it is also being held on home soil,’ Richards noted. ‘Any World Cup would be a dream for me, especially the opportunity to play in front of American fans, which is my top priority. I knew I had to do whatever it took to be here, and I hope to deliver a show on Friday.'”
