After a 24‑year drought, the United States men’s national team secured its first knockout‑stage victory at a men’s FIFA World Cup.
A 2‑0 triumph over Bosnia and Herzegovina on Wednesday at San Francisco Bay Area Stadium marked the U.S.’s first knockout‑stage win since the historic 2‑0 victory over Mexico that sent the team to the quarterfinals in South Korea, making it only the second such knockout victory in its World Cup history.
Striker Folarin Balogun opened the scoring in the 45th minute after earlier being wrongly flagged offside. Balogun’s goal makes him the fifth American to reach three World Cup goals, joining Landon Donovan, Bert Patenaude, Clint Dempsey and Brian McBride.
Balogun’s dismissal in the 64th minute reduced the U.S. to ten men, but midfielder Malik Tillman secured the insurance goal in the 82nd minute with a composed free‑kick.
The United States advances to the round of 16, where it will face Belgium at Seattle Stadium on Monday, July 6. The matchup is a rematch of the teams’ 2014 round‑of‑16 clash in Brazil.
