U.S. Military Strike Operations Against Iranian Assets Following Strait of Hormuz Incident

US President Donald Trump initiated military operations against Iran on Friday, a day after an Iranian attack on a commercial vessel in the Strait of Hormuz, raising questions about the stability of a temporary ceasefire pact. The strikes follow an Iranian drone assault on the Ever Lovely, a Singapore-flagged cargo ship, which the US claims caused “moderate damage” to the vessel’s upper deck. Though the ship continued its journey, the incident prompted Trump to condemn Iran on Truth Social, stating, “We knocked down three other drones. Obviously, this is a foolish violation of our Ceasefire Agreement.”

The Trump administration, previously allied with Israel to escalate military actions against Iran, announced retaliatory strikes targeting Iranian missile infrastructure and coastal radar systems. Central Command confirmed the operations as a “proportionate response” to Thursday’s Iranian attack, emphasizing that the US remains committed to enforcing the ceasefire’s terms. A spokesperson noted that American forces continue to assist in coordinating safe shipping routes through the Strait of Hormuz while monitoring compliance with the agreement.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) responded to US actions by asserting its regional influence, declaring that military sites near US deployments were targeted. The IRGC criticized Washington for “breaching the ceasefire’s terms,” accusing the US of exploiting the situation to “undermine Iran’s sovereignty.” The group warned that future actions would be “more extensive” if hostilities persist, while reiterating that control of the Strait of Hormuz remains under Iranian supervision.

The IRGC’s statement underscored the ongoing tension, stating, “The reality in the Persian Gulf has changed. Respect the rules, use secure routes. Do not mistake control for escalation.”

US officials argued that the strikes addressed a “clear violation” of the ceasefire, with CENTCOM insisting that Iranian drones constituted a direct threat to maritime safety. Critics, however, highlight the US military’s unilateral actions as inconsistent with the agreement’s dispute-resolution mechanisms. The National Iranian American Council characterized the retaliation as “the most significant breach of the MOU yet,” noting the absence of coordination channels outlined in original negotiations.
