U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order imposing a 50% tariff on a broad range of Canadian imports, citing “unequal treatment” of U.S. automotive, dairy, and alcohol products.
These tariffs, set to take effect on August 19, represent a significant escalation in trade tensions between the two North American neighbours.
According to the White House, the measures are intended to safeguard American industries from perceived disadvantages.
Targeted goods include consumer products such as wine and hockey equipment, as well as industrial materials like commercial cement. However, key Canadian exports including energy resources, potash, critical minerals, and seafood will be exempt from the duties.
