U2 Debuts Cover of The Pogues’ ‘Yeah, Yeah, Yeah, Yeah, Yeah’ on UK Charts

U2 is expected to drop a highly anticipated new album later this year, though the exact release date remains under wraps. Earlier in 2026, the iconic Irish rock band released two standalone EPs—Days of Ash in mid-February and Easter Lily in early April—which are not attached to their upcoming full-length project.

Among their recent releases, U2 unveiled “Street of Dreams” and “Fireflies,” a collaboration with Martin Garrix, with the former slated to appear on their upcoming album. The band also recorded a cover of The Pogues’ classic track, “Yeah, Yeah, Yeah, Yeah, Yeah,” which has now debuted on multiple charts in the United Kingdom.

U2’s New Cover Debuts on Two U.K. Charts

The cover of “Yeah, Yeah, Yeah, Yeah, Yeah” has officially debuted on two key United Kingdom charts this week. It opened at No. 68 on the Official Singles Downloads chart, which tracks digital purchases, and No. 79 on the Official Singles Sales chart, which aggregates all eligible sales across all formats.

U2 Scores a Milestone Twentieth Sales Hit

This debut marks a major milestone for U2, representing their 20th career appearance on the Official Singles Sales chart. The band first cracked this tally in March 2017 with “With or Without You,” racking up five total entries by the end of that year. The Shane MacGowan cover is their third new entry on this chart in 2026, following “Song of the Future” (which peaked at No. 98 in March) and “Street of Dreams” (which reached No. 17 earlier this summer).

U2 Has Scored 24 Download Chart Smashes

With this latest entry, U2 has now tallied 24 appearances on the Official Singles Downloads chart. The group achieved their first download chart-topper in October 2004 with “Vertigo,” which spent nine weeks at the summit. Their recent singles, “Song of the Future” and “Street of Dreams,” have also successfully landed on this download chart, further adding to their impressive legacy.

Shane MacGowan Scores Another Posthumous Hit

The late Shane MacGowan continues to chart posthumously, securing his second career placement on the Official Singles Sales chart under his own name with “Yeah, Yeah, Yeah, Yeah, Yeah.” He first entered this chart last April alongside Sinéad O’Connor with “Haunted,” which peaked at No. 39. This latest release also marks MacGowan’s very first appearance on the Official Singles Downloads chart.

U2 Covers a Pogues Classic

Originally released by The Pogues in 1988 and penned by MacGowan, “Yeah, Yeah, Yeah, Yeah, Yeah” receives a fresh take by U2. However, this cover was not recorded for the band’s own upcoming studio album. Instead, it was created for 20th Century Paddy – The Songs of Shane MacGowan, a tribute compilation honoring the legendary Irish songwriter, scheduled for release on November 13. The tribute project, put together in close collaboration with MacGowan’s family, features an impressive lineup of contributors including Bruce Springsteen, Hozier, Tom Waits, The Libertines, and Glen Hansard. All proceeds from the album are directed to the Dublin Simon Community in memory of MacGowan.
