The UFL introduced a rule change in 2026, increasing the points for a 60-yard field goal from three to four. This has led to questions about whether the NFL might adopt a similar approach.
Michael DiRocco of ESPN has addressed the questionby consulting UFL kickers and Pro Football Hall of Famers.
While the rule rewards long kicks, it may encourage strategic plays near the 50-yard line. Brandon Aubrey of the Cowboys said, “I think it’s a little weird… It makes you really question your playcalling around that area. It’s interesting for kickers with the leg to make it, but it perverses the incentives of football.”
Adam Vinatieri supported the idea, adding, “I think it’s a good idea. It makes kickers more valuable, but it changes the game.”
Hall of Famer Jan Stenerud disagreed, stating, “The score should reflect how well the team moves the ball. Getting three points for a long kick doesn’t make sense.”
The rule could shift team strategies, such as intentionally losing yards to set up a four-point attempt. However, the NFL’s Competition Committee shows no momentum to adopt it. While the league has borrowed ideas from other leagues, this rule may remain a UFL experiment.
