The Ugandan military’s withdrawal from the Invictus Games follows a letter from King Charles III clarifying that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are no longer working members of the royal family.
General Muhoozi Kainerugaba cited concerns about the “Harry-Meghan situation” as the rationale for Uganda’s decision, stating in an official post that the country would not participate in any endeavor lacking the King’s explicit endorsement.
“In order not to be construed as being opposed to His Majesty King Charles III of the United Kingdom, whom we deeply revere, Uganda hereby withdraws from the Invictus Games,” the general wrote.
However, royal sources have indicated that the King supports initiatives benefiting wounded service members, suggesting alignment with the Games’ mission despite the withdrawal.
An Invictus Games spokesperson confirmed that no official notification of withdrawal has been received from Ugandan officials, adding that organizers are seeking clarification through diplomatic channels.
Among other social media posts, General Kainerugaba made personal remarks about his own leadership qualities and expressed frustration with fellow military officials.
Uganda’s initial participation in the 2025 Birmingham Games was announced in July during Prince Harry’s promotional visit to London, marking the nation as the 26th country to join the international adaptive sports competition for wounded veterans.
