The United Kingdom has announced the deployment of Royal Air Force Typhoon fighter jets to Saudi Arabia in response to escalating Houthi rebel attacks on the kingdom, as stated in a government declaration on Tuesday.
According to the Ministry of Defence, these aircraft will enhance the security of Saudi cities and critical infrastructure against drone and missile threats. However, the mission is strictly defensive, with no plans to conduct offensive operations against Houthi positions in Yemen.
British Defense Secretary Wes Streeting condemned the Houthi attacks, describing them as “absolutely despicable,” and specifically highlighted the repeated assaults on Riyadh’s international airport, which has been targeted 20 times since early October.
These strikes have resulted in at least 18 fatalities and hundreds of injuries since October began, according to reports.
Additional Military Support from the UK
This deployment follows a formal request from Saudi Arabia and builds upon earlier military assistance commitments made by London in September.
The UK will also provide an Atlas A400M military transport aircraft and military advisors. Additionally, the UK has extended its offer to supply air-to-air refueling support to Saudi aircraft for an additional 90 days.
The move coincides with the ongoing escalation of Yemen’s civil war, which intensified after the collapse of a years-long truce in September. Houthi factions have intensified attacks on Saudi oil facilities, civilian infrastructure, and maritime trade routes, causing significant disruptions to global oil markets.
Recent strikes in Yemen have also targeted Saudi-backed government forces, including a Monday attack on a military training camp that killed 58 individuals, according to Yemeni authorities.
Saudi Arabia and the United States have attributed Houthi actions to Iranian support, a claim Tehran consistently denies.
