Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood announced that the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) of Iran will be designated a threat to national security.

Mahmood intends to invoke new legislative powers to prohibit any form of support for the group, which has been associated with death threats and intimidation within the United Kingdom.

In a parliamentary submission, she detailed that any expression of support for the IRGC — ranging from public endorsement to logistical assistance — will constitute a criminal offence, carrying a maximum penalty of 14 years’ imprisonment.

Additionally, the Islamic Movement of Companions of the Right (IMCR) and the volunteer wing of Russia’s GRU, the country’s foreign military intelligence service, are also being proscribed.
