The UK’s Armed Forces have been deployed to the remote Arctic island of Jan Mayen alongside Norwegian and US allies as part of a demonstration of NATO’s enhanced capability to conduct joint operations in the High North.
From August 26 to September 4, 2026, personnel from LXX Squadron of the Royal Air Force operated alongside detachments from the UK Commando Force during Operation Atlantic City. This trilateral exercise formed part of Arctic Sentry, representing NATO’s enhanced vigilance activities in the High North region.
Located in an isolated stretch of the Norwegian Sea, approximately 620 miles from mainland Norway, Jan Mayen holds significant geostrategic value. The island sits north of the Greenland-Iceland-UK gap, an area of water critical to the defense of northern Europe and the broader Euro-Atlantic region.
During the operation, UK forces collaborated closely with the Royal Norwegian Navy, the Norwegian Home Guard, and units from the US Marine Corps. Together, they integrated various sensor and communication systems to enhance NATO’s readiness for potential security challenges in the Arctic environment.
The UK’s involvement in this deployment underscores its commitment to NATO’s collective security and highlights the Armed Forces’ adaptability to the unique demands of Arctic warfare.

Operation Atlantic City took place concurrently with naval maneuvers under Operation Northern Viking 26. This coordination allowed the trilateral force to maximize overlapping maritime and sensing capabilities across the European theater, while reinforcing NATO’s broader Arctic Sentry initiatives.
The exercise builds upon similar Allied training activities conducted around Jan Mayen the previous year and leverages the island’s historical significance as a strategic outpost.
Arctic training equips UK forces with essential experience in maritime operations, surveillance, movement, survival, and joint operations under some of the world’s most extreme weather conditions.
