The British Foreign Secretary stated that the Israeli government is losing friends and allies worldwide due to its actions in the Gaza Strip and the occupied West Bank, according to Anadolu.
In an interview with the UK-based podcast The Rest is Politics, Ed Miliband stated, “The Israeli government is losing friends. It’s not gaining allies; it’s lost allies. It’s losing allies all over.”
Miliband noted that the recent announcement of sanctions targeting illegal Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank followed warnings that the two-state solution is being “destroyed by the facts on the ground.”
“All measures are intended to make a difference to that, targeting the illegal occupation, not targeting or delegitimizing in any way the state of Israel,” he emphasized.
He added that the status quo is unsustainable, pointing out that Israel’s E1 settlement expansion project has long been viewed as a “red line” for the international community because it would effectively sever East Jerusalem from the West Bank, rendering a Palestinian state unviable.
Miliband explained that the decision to impose sanctions was driven by a combination of factors: the International Court of Justice’s 2024 ruling calling for an end to the occupation, the dismantling of settlements, and reparations; the prolonged nature of the occupation; and the widespread displacement of Palestinians.
“We cannot give up” in the face of what he described as “settler terrorism,” Miliband asserted, reiterating his belief that a stable Middle East is impossible without a two-state solution between Palestinians and Israelis.
“Nothing can justify what has unfolded in Gaza,” Miliband stated, describing the situation as “absolutely unspeakable” and “appalling” after meeting with individuals, including a doctor who worked in the Gaza Strip.
He also characterized Israel’s blocking of humanitarian aid into Gaza as an “absolutely deliberate strategy,” noting that the situation on the ground remains terrible.
“Since the so-called ceasefire, 1,200 Palestinians have been killed. That’s not much of a ceasefire,” he remarked.
Miliband stressed that the UK cannot remain passive in the face of “settler terrorism.” He noted that regardless of the outcome of the Israeli elections scheduled for October 27, the government is aiming to send a clear message to the Israeli people that the international community will not stand by as the occupation continues.
Last week, Miliband announced a series of measures, including a ban on imports from illegal Israeli settlements, sanctions on companies and individuals facilitating settlement expansion, and additional sanctions on extremist Israeli occupiers accused of supporting or inciting violence against Palestinians.
