Police in southwest England have launched a murder investigation into the death of former Reform UK Member of Parliament Ann Widdecombe after the former minister was discovered dead in Devon.
A Conservative minister in the 1990s known for her outspoken remarks, Widdecombe later aligned herself with right‑wing populist Nigel Farage, becoming a prominent figure in the Brexit movement before joining the now‑defunct Reform UK party where she served as immigration and justice spokesperson.
What Police Have Said About the Case
Detective Chief Inspector Ilona Rosson said, “Our enquiry is in its early stages but progressing rapidly. We are mobilising all necessary resources to determine exactly what transpired and to locate the individual responsible. We suspect the perpetrator to be a white male.”
Police were called to Widdecombe’s residence at Haytor in Devon around midday.azure on Thursday. She was found there with severe injuries, which have been deemed fatal.
Rosson urged anyone with information, no matter how small, to come forward: “We are particularly interested in any witnesses or individuals who may have observed suspicious activity in the Haytor Vale area, or who possess CCTV, doorbell, or dash‑cam footage that could aid our investigation.”
The investigation will continue to receive updates as more information becomes available, Rosson added.
She also requested that the public refrain from speculation, particularly on social media, explaining that such conjecture can jeopardise the investigation and cause distress to Widdecombe’s family and friends.
Background on Ann Widdecombe
Hailing from a long career in politics, Widdecombe served as an MP for 23 years and held ministerial posts in John Major’s government during the 1990s. She was a strong advocate for Britain’s exit from the European Union, later joining Nigel Farage’s anti‑immigration platform and becoming a vocal figure in the Reform UK party.
