British Prime Minister Keir Starmer will travel to Kyiv on Monday for his first international trip since assuming office last month, his office confirmed, coinciding with Ukraine’s 35th independence anniversary.
Starmer has pledged robust support for Ukraine as it continues to resist Russia’s full-scale invasion.
The Labour leader’s visit accompanies an announcement that the UK has authorized defence manufacturer MBDA to release classified data regarding British components used in the long-range SCALP missile. This move aims to facilitate the establishment of local assembly lines in Ukraine.
The SCALP is the French-produced variant of the UK’s Storm Shadow missile, with both systems relying on shared Franco-British technology.
Downing Street noted that the UK was the first nation to supply Ukraine with long-range strike weapons for defensive purposes in 2023.
The decision to declassify the component information will “allow the French and Ukrainians to move forward with the Ukrainian assembly of the missile,” the statement added.
“It also complements the major UK effort to rapidly develop low-cost advanced long-range strike weapons for Ukraine through Project Brakestop,” the Prime Minister’s office said.
