UK Successfully Intercepts VTuo Oil Tanker from Russia’s Shadow Fleet in English Channel
The UK launched a six-hour operation in the early hours to apprehend a vessel suspected of being part of Russia’s shadow fleet in the English Channel. Royal Marines and National Crime Agency specialists boarded the ship during the mission, highlighted by dedicated enforcement efforts designed to counter evasion tactics. The intercepted tanker, identified as SMYRTOS, was seized in close coordination with French forces.
UK officials emphasized that this marks the first major UK-led raid targeting the shadow fleet, aimed at disrupting Russia’s ability to sustain its military operations in Ukraine. The vessel was taken into custody offshore and is now under monitoring. The operation underscores growing international cooperation against sanctioned entities linked to Russia.
Disrupting these unauthorized vessels is seen as a critical step in curbing Russia’s war funding mechanisms. Ukrainian and European leaders view such actions as essential blows to Russian offensives. This development has drawn sharp reactions from Ukraine’s officials, who welcomed the move as a key escalation against Russia’s aggression.
