KYIV: Heavy rainfall is expected across much of Ukraine over the next week, potentially slowing the harvest of corn and oilseeds, according to analysts at the Ukrainian Agrarian Council (UAC) on Tuesday.
Ukraine has completed harvesting early grains, including wheat and barley, and has begun gathering corn, sunflower and soybeans.
The analysts said wet conditions would particularly affect sunflower and soybean harvesting.
UAC warned that rain could also increase corn production costs, as the crop will require additional drying before storage.
The group estimates that extra drying could add $10 to $15 per metric ton to production costs, which currently range from $110 to $130 per ton.
Ukraine’s agriculture ministry said farmers had harvested 0.34 million metric tons of corn as of Tuesday.
