A coalition of Ukrainian military units has conducted a series of coordinated strikes against Crimea, with the 9th Kairos Battalion of the 414th Unmanned Systems Brigade playing a pivotal role. The campaign, planned in three phases since spring, began with assaults on land routes and infrastructure, followed by attacks on stockpiles. The third phase, targeting maritime routes, commenced last week after identifying vulnerabilities in Russian naval operations, according to Fin, a senior sergeant in the brigade who used only his call sign per military protocol.
Operating drones over 250 miles across the Sea of Azov, Ukrainian forces navigate Russian air defenses and electronic warfare systems. To evade detection, sorties are flown mere feet above the water’s surface before striking designated targets, as explained by Fin.
Despite these efforts, Ukraine’s Crimea initiative has not deterred Moscow. The Kremlin has maintained defiance, retaliating with ballistic missile bombardments on Kyiv and reiterating its intent to advance territorial claims in eastern Ukraine.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey V. Lavrov denounced the strikes as “worse than piracy,” while state-backed commentators and bloggers criticized military leadership for failing to safeguard naval assets. One prominent blogger, Voenny Osvedomitel, warned on Telegram that continued setbacks could lead to a “Strait of Hormuz scenario,” where Ukraine and its allies effectively blockade Russian shipping, mirroring U.S.-Iran dynamics.
