The revelation, shared by Zelensky during his Wednesday address to the UN General Assembly, directly counters Pyongyang’s claim that its troops fighting alongside Russian forces would rather die than surrender.
Analysts say North Korea is unlikely to admit the transfer publicly, but it may tighten ideological oversight of its forces stationed in Russia to deter additional defections.
“We recently transferred two North Korean prisoners of war to South Korea,” Zelensky stated in his UN remarks, referring to the country by its official name.
