Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has removed the country’s defense chief, Oleksandr Syrskyi.
The decision followed recent protests sparked by the dismissal of Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov, which underscored public discontent with military leadership changes.
Early speculation linking Fedorov’s exit to tensions with Syrskyi was validated by subsequent developments.
Fedorov, 35, gained recognition for revitalizing military reforms and leading anti-corruption initiatives within the defense sector.
Syrskyi, 60, faced criticism for perceived reluctance to modernize Ukraine’s military strategies and structure.
In a social media statement, Zelensky acknowledged Syrskyi’s contributions during critical defense operations, including Kyiv’s defense in 2022.
Mykhailo Drapatyi, a respected and experienced general, has been appointed as Syrskyi’s successor.
“Formal procedures for this transition will be finalized tomorrow,” Zelensky confirmed.
