Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha announced on Wednesday that he held discussions with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi aimed at mitigating bilateral tensions.
Speaking on the social media platform X, Sybiha noted that the meeting took place on the margins of the United Nations General Assembly in New York. The encounter served as a continuation of a phone call the two officials shared in July.
Throughout the ongoing four-and-a-half-year conflict with Russia, Ukraine has endured repeated assaults from Iranian-designed drones. In response, Kyiv has advanced its counter-drone technologies and extended technical assistance to Middle Eastern nations targeted by Tehran.
“Diplomacy is about direct conversation, even in challenging circumstances,” Sybiha stated.
“Our conversation focused on mutual steps to prevent further aggravation of tensions between our countries. We agreed to keep existing channels of communication open,” he added.
The Ukrainian minister mentioned that the dialogue included an exchange of perspectives on the geopolitical situations in both the Middle East and Europe, alongside various ongoing peace initiatives.
“I reiterated Ukraine’s position in support of a sooner restoration of peace and stability in both our regions,” Sybiha affirmed.
The July telephone conversation between the two diplomats followed a Ukrainian drone strike on an Iranian vessel, an incident that resulted in one fatality and left another sailor injured.
At the time, Iran condemned the assault and warned of potential retaliation. Sybiha responded by urging Araghchi to avoid escalatory actions and to cease providing support for Russia’s military campaign in Ukraine.
