Ukraine and Russia exchanged military strikes overnight, with the Kharkiv regional governor reporting 10 civilian fatalities near the Russian border and Moscow’s mayor stating that Ukrainian forces launched approximately 620 drones toward the region.
These attacks follow one of the largest Ukrainian offensives against Russian territory during the war over the weekend and a United Nations warning that intensified Russian strikes on towns and cities in July elevated civilian deaths to levels not seen since May 2022 and the early months of combat.
The drone assaults on the Moscow region caused minor damage to a facility operated by Russian online retailer Wildberries, a frequent target of Ukrainian operations in recent weeks.
What occurred in the Kharkiv missile strike?
Governor Oleh Syniehubov of the Kharkiv oblast confirmed that 10 individuals were killed and 18 injured in a Russian missile attack on the village of Pechenihy.
According to Syniehubov’s Telegram post, the attack damaged 10 private residences, a cafe, a post office, a retail shop, and seven vehicles. These casualty figures remain preliminary.
Emergency responders are actively addressing the aftermath of the strike.
Parts of Kharkiv region and adjacent areas in Russia’s Belgorod region remain under Russian occupation. Both territories have faced frequent targeting since the conflict began.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy indicated the attack struck a busy intersection.
How drones targeted Moscow’s capital region?
Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin reported that 620 drones approached the capital region overnight. Most were intercepted, with 180 downed within the Moscow area, according to his statement.
Russian state news agency TASS described the incident as the heaviest drone assault in two years. The Defense Ministry claimed it had repelled 791 Ukrainian drones overnight across its territory and Crimea, figures not independently verified but indicative of heightened Ukrainian activity.
Moscow Region Governor Andrei Vorobyov reported over 150 drones downed in the area, causing minor injuries to three individuals in separate districts, including a child with a hand shrapnel wound.
Damage included residential buildings, with one structure allegedly destroyed in the village of Kuznetsy. A drone also reportedly damaged a Wildberries warehouse in Kolomna near Atlant-Park, in addition to a nearby retail location.
UK drone involvement disputed by Russia
Russia’s Embassy in London criticized media reports claiming UK-supplied drones were used in attacks on Russian territory.
The embassy accused the UK of escalating tensions while feigning peace efforts, labeling UK actions as complicity in Ukrainian “terrorist attacks” by “neo-Nazi forces.” It warned of potential consequences for London’s involvement.
German Environment Minister’s Kyiv Visit
German Environment Minister Carsten Schneider arrived in Kyiv on Tuesday, accompanied by industry experts specializing in climate technologies.
The trip aims to assess opportunities for resilient infrastructure development and reconstruction, including collaboration with German businesses. Schneider will also review Ukraine’s nuclear facilities, particularly the damaged Chernobyl containment structure and the occupied Zaporizhzhia power plant, which remains in cold shutdown but requires continuous external support.
