Ukrainian Drone Attack on Russian Oil Refineries Results in 13 Casualties

A Ukrainian drone strike targeting oil facilities in Tatarstan has left at least 13 people dead, according to Russian authorities, marking one of the most severe attacks on Russia since the outbreak of the Ukraine war.

The attack also injured 75 individuals, including a child, as reported by local officials. The strike focused on Nizhnekamsk’s Tanevo oil refinery, a site previously targeted on June 12, and was executed using FirePoint FP-1 drones, which Ukraine’s defense sector confirmed. Kyiv has not responded to the incident.

Visual evidence from social media depicts smoke and flames emerging from the refinery complex, accompanied by audible air raid sirens. The assault occurred overnight and extended into early morning hours.

Russian authorities acknowledged the damage to industrial infrastructure but noted that civilian areas were also impacted. The Tatarstan regional head, Rustam Minnikhanov, expressed condolences to victims’ families, while Nizhnekamsk mayor Radmir Belayev declared a mourning period.

Ukrainian officials, including Center for Countering Disinformation head Andriy Kovalenko, accused Russia of utilizing civilian infrastructure for military purposes, stating, “Every civilian death in Russia stems from Putin’s policies. Russians must hold their leader accountable.” Moscow attributed the strike to the presence of non-military personnel in the area, though the BBC has not independently confirmed this claim.

Amid escalating tensions, Kyiv has intensified long-range retaliatory strikes on Russian energy and logistical targets, causing rising civilian casualties. In parallel, Russia continues large-scale airstrikes on Ukrainian cities, including a recent Kyiv attack that killed 21 and an artillery bombardment in Kharkiv that resulted in five deaths.

Russian air defenses intercepted over 450 Ukrainian drones during the night, underscoring the heightened tactical exchange between the two factions.
