Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said on Wednesday that he met with his Iranian counterpart, Abbas Araqchi, on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York, following a telephone conversation in July.
Sybiha emphasized that diplomacy requires direct dialogue even under challenging circumstances and that both sides agreed to take mutual steps to prevent further escalation of tensions, keeping existing communication channels open.
The discussion covered the situation in the Middle East and Europe, as well as ongoing peace efforts, with Sybiha reaffirming Ukraine’s support for restoring peace and stability in both regions.
This meeting followed a July Ukrainian drone strike on an Iranian ship that killed one sailor and injured another; Iran condemned the attack and threatened retaliation, while Sybiha urged Araqchi to refrain from any escalatory steps and cease Iran’s support for Russia’s war against Ukraine.
