The UN General Assembly condemned the US economic embargo of Cuba for the 34th year on Wednesday, as Washington’s lobbying efforts led to increased opposition and abstentions from key nations.
The vote resulted in 130 countries in favor, 17 against, and 25 abstentions, reflecting a notable decline from the previous year’s support of over 160 nations with only 12 abstentions. While such resolutions are not legally binding, they serve as an indicator of global opinion.
For the first time in 34 years, Western countries including Germany, Italy, and Latvia were among those that refrained from voting, signaling a shift in diplomatic alignment.
