UN Secretary-General’s personal envoy Maria Angela Holguin reiterated the Organization’s dedication to advancing Cyprus settlement efforts, declaring, ‘We are pushing forward and will continue.’
Holguin voiced optimism regarding an informal five-party conference before year-end, following her meeting with Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides at the Presidential Palace.
She emphasized that progress efforts continue apace, underscored by her mandate from UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to exhaust all avenues for advancement before his term concludes.
Holguin highlighted the necessity of progress across three frontiers: confidence-building measures, future talk methodology, and substantive dispute resolution.
Holguin welcomed the direct engagement between President Christodoulides and Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman, noting her interest in the substance and outcomes of their recent exchanges during her meeting with the Cypriot president.
Holguin reiterated the commitment to resuming Cyprus talks, aiming to establish the conditions necessary for an informal five-party conference ahead of the 2026 deadline.
At the 13th Organisation of Turkic States summit in Ankara, Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman affirmed the north’s resolve to pursue a solution through close coordination with Turkey.
Northern Cyprus remains recognized as an independent state solely by Turkey.
