UN Secretary-General Commends Pakistan’s Peace Efforts During High-Level Security Cooperation Meetings]
United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres praised Pakistan’s contributions to global peace initiatives during a meeting with Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi on the sidelines of the fifth United Nations Chiefs of Police Summit (UNCOPS 2026) at UN headquarters in New York.
The discussions between the two leaders focused on regional security dynamics and international developments, with particular emphasis on Pakistan’s mediation efforts between the United States and Iran, as well as its ongoing role in promoting global stability.
Guterres acknowledged Pakistan’s sustained commitment to peace-building during the bilateral exchange, which also touched upon broader multilateral cooperation frameworks.
Naqvi subsequently met with his Russian counterpart, Interior Minister Vladimir Alexandrovich Kolokoltsev, during the same summit. The two ministers explored avenues for enhanced collaboration in counterterrorism, counter-narcotics, cybercrime prevention, and law-enforcement training methodologies.
Discussions also encompassed plans for joint police exercises and coordinated strategies to address terrorist networks operating in the Afghan region, according to Pakistan’s interior ministry.
The meeting concluded with agreements to institutionalize bilateral cooperation through a memorandum of understanding between their respective ministries. Naqvi also extended an invitation for Kolokoltsev’s visit to Pakistan, while reviewing progress on prior commitments.
Naqvi highlighted the presence of over 25 active terrorist organizations in Afghanistan, emphasizing that countering extremist groups requires collective regional responsibility and coordinated international action. Both sides acknowledged the necessity of unified approaches to dismantle terrorist networks.
Earlier in the week, Naqvi met with Chinese Minister of State for Public Security and Head of the Special Service Bureau Ling Zhifeng. The two sides reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening security cooperation across counterterrorism, border management, irregular migration control, and counter-narcotics efforts.
During these discussions, Naqvi underscored the urgent need to address terrorist financing at all levels, calling for collective action against countries involved in sponsoring and financing terrorism.
He highlighted Pakistan’s establishment of a Special Protection Police Force designed to ensure security for Chinese nationals within the country, while advocating for enhanced people-to-people exchanges and streamlined visa procedures to fortify bilateral relations.
The Chinese minister recognized Pakistan’s sacrifices in the anti-terrorism struggle and emphasized continued cooperation between the nations.
Naqvi Calls for Enhanced International Collaboration Against Transnational Security Threats
Addressing the UN Chiefs of Police Summit, Naqvi emphasized the critical importance of international cooperation in confronting transnational security challenges, noting that “the world faces common security challenges” that transcend national boundaries.
“Terrorism, organized crime, cybercrime, drug trafficking, human smuggling, and money laundering,” he enumerated, “are threats that affect all nations. No country stands insulated from these dangers. And no nation can combat them in isolation.”
Naqvi stressed that international coordination has become “more vital than ever” and advocated for strengthened information sharing and collaborative efforts among global law-enforcement agencies.
“We must work together,” he stated. “We must trust each other. We must share information swiftly. We must support one another. And we must forge stronger partnerships between our law enforcement bodies.”
Naqvi also addressed the adaptation requirements for modern policing, warning that criminals increasingly exploit emerging technologies to commit offenses.
“Technology evolves rapidly,” he observed. “Criminals are leveraging new technology to commit crimes. Therefore, we must also harness modern technology to prevent criminal activities.”
He concluded by emphasizing the need to “enhance police officers’ skills, strengthen training programs, and increase innovation utilization.”
