ISLAMABAD, Sept 1 (Reuters) – A senior United Nations official has warned that the Himalayan region confronts severe threats from upcoming glacial floods, as the death toll from last week’s Nepal disaster—sparked by a collapsing glacier—exceeded 1,000.

Beyond the danger to hydroelectric power that sustains many communities, vast stretches of riverbanks where millions reside could become effectively uninhabitable.

“Technology cannot advance quickly enough to avert losses along these expansive river systems that channel the overflow from glacial lakes,” said Kanni Wignaraja, Assistant Secretary‑General at the United Nations, in an interview with Reuters.

A 2020 study catalogued 47 potentially hazardous glacial lakes across Nepal, China and India. Subsequent analyses suggest the actual figure is considerably larger.

Wignaraja, who also serves as UNDP Regional Director for Asia and the Pacific, noted that the population at risk “runs into the millions,” referencing updated data assembled by the UNDP and partner organizations in June.

The catastrophic flood that struck Nepal last week resulted from a section of a glacier near the Langtang Lirung summit giving way, sending a massive landslide cascading into the valley and generating a flood surge down the Trishuli River.

Glacial lake outburst floods represent a distinct hazard: they occur when meltwater accumulates behind a natural dam, building pressure until the barrier fails or overflows, unleashing a rapid downstream flood.

U.N. officials warn that both phenomena are intensifying as climate change accelerates glacial melt, destabilizing rock slopes and increasing pressure on glacial lake barriers.

Wignaraja added that the region’s mountain ranges are geologically young, making them more susceptible to tectonic movements that can precipitate abrupt glacier or lake‑dam failures.

Nepal’s Heavy Dependence on Glaciers

Studies have identified potentially hazardous glacial lakes across extensive portions of the Hindu Kush region.

Wignaraja stressed that no nation in the area relies more heavily on glaciers for both water resources and economic livelihoods than Nepal, which now confronts “extremely difficult decisions.” For many river‑bank residents, relocating to higher terrain may be financially unfeasible.

Critical infrastructure will continue to be at risk. Nepal’s electricity generation losses could surpass earlier estimates; the UNDP reported that the flood destroyed 15 large power stations under construction, on top of those already operating.

Wignaraja pointed out that modern technology could enhance the flood resilience of electrical grids and hydropower plants.

However, last week’s “mud‑and‑ice surge” would have overwhelmed virtually any existing protective measures. “No engineering solution could have halted this,” she observed.
