The global community has entered a “danger zone of extreme weather” as the initial impacts of the El Niño phenomenon begin to manifest across the globe, according to a stark warning from United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres.

The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has released its latest assessment of the natural climate phenomenon, indicating that the current El Niño event could be the most powerful in over 70 years and is projected to persist until at least February 2027.

This natural phenomenon significantly alters global weather patterns, pushing certain regions into severe drought while subjecting others to intensified typhoons, heavy rainfall, and catastrophic flooding.

Meteorologists further predict that El Niño will exacerbate temperatures in various regions, compounding the ongoing global warming driven by human-induced climate change.

“El Niño is visibly supersizing before our eyes. The scientific evidence leaves no room for doubt: our planet is navigating uncharted waters, and those waters are rapidly heating up,” Guterres stated.

In discussions with global governments and climate scientists, measures are being implemented to mitigate the risks of fatalities, mass displacement, and environmental degradation. While early warning systems have been bolstered and preemptive medical resources deployed, the unprecedented strength of this event has raised profound concerns, particularly for highly vulnerable populations.

The WMO, a specialized UN agency, has announced a “major mobilization” effort to distribute its forecasts of potential extreme weather events linked to El Niño to as many communities as possible.

WMO Secretary-General Celeste Saulo issued a stern warning, stating, “El Niño has the potential to deliver a massive blow to communities and economies worldwide.”

El Niño is a natural climate phenomenon originating in the Pacific Ocean, characterized by shifts in wind patterns. This process allows warm ocean water to spread eastward, releasing substantial heat into the atmosphere.

Sea surface temperatures across the central and eastern tropical Pacific have risen sharply in recent months, serving as a clear indicator of a rapidly strengthening El Niño.

Within the Pacific’s primary monitoring zone, surface temperatures have hovered well above 2°C above average in recent weeks, placing the event on track to be classified as “very strong.”

However, forecasts suggest that the event is poised to surpass even this significant threshold, with monthly sea surface temperatures potentially approaching 4°C above average.

Such a peak would establish this as the most potent El Niño event recorded since at least 1950, potentially by a substantial margin.
