Undav’s Late Heroics Propel Germany to the Top of Group E
Germany secured a spot in the FIFA World Cup 2026 knockout rounds after overcoming a first-half deficit to defeat Ivory Coast 2-1.
Deniz Undav emerged as the hero, scoring twice as a substitute to lead Germany to a thrilling 2-1 victory over Ivory Coast. The win ensures Germany’s progression to the knockout stages, marking their most successful run since their championship victory in 2014.
Despite having two goals disallowed during a frustrating first half, Germany maintained their composure, utilizing precise passing to break down a dynamic and attacking Ivory Coast side in a high-energy Group E encounter.
Undav equalized in the 68th minute with a clinical volley and later sealed the win with a brilliant turn and strike that left goalkeeper Yahia Fofana powerless. The versatile forward continues his prolific form, having now netted nine goals in his last eight appearances.
Ivory Coast nearly salvaged a draw late in the game when Simon Adingra found space in the penalty area, but he was unable to get a shot away. Germany quickly transitioned to the attack, though Fofana managed to block a dangerous low effort from Nathaniel Brown.
The Ivory Coast had taken an early lead thanks to Franck Kessie, who capitalized on a rebound from an Amad Diallo effort following a surging run and cross from Yan Diomande. This goal extended Ivory Coast’s streak to seven consecutive tournament matches with a goal, the longest such run in the nation’s history.
Playing before a supportive crowd in Toronto, Julian Nagelsmann’s side struggled for efficiency early on, recording eight attempts without a goal by halftime. Controversies plagued the first period, including a disallowed goal by Aleksandar Pavlovic in the 25th minute after he was ruled to have fouled Fofana, and another cancelled effort after Jamal Musiala was judged to have fouled Odilon Kossounou.
With this victory, Germany finishes at the top of Group E with six points and advances to the round of 32. Ivory Coast remains on three points after two matches. The group stage concludes with Germany facing Ecuador in New Jersey and Ivory Coast taking on Curacao in Philadelphia this Thursday.
