Term: Heliosphere

Pronunciation: HEE’-lee-uhs-feer

Definition: The heliosphere is the expansive zone surrounding the Sun that is shaped by the solar wind—a continuous stream of charged particles released from the Sun. Envision it as a vast bubble enclosing the Sun and its planets, extending roughly three times farther than Pluto’s orbit. This protective shield guards the solar system against interstellar radiation; however, the solar wind can also gradually wear away planetary atmospheres. Earth benefits from an additional layer of defense through its magnetosphere, which redirects much of the solar wind.

Example usage: As the solar system moves through the galaxy, researchers once imagined the heliosphere as having a comet-like tail, yet newer studies indicate the solar wind bubble more closely resembles a flattened, crescent-shaped form.
