Six years after their departure from the United Kingdom—a move that triggered intense public discourse regarding race, the monarchy, and media ethics—Prince Harry and Meghan, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, are returning to Britain from the United States with their children, Archie, 7, and Lilibet, 5.
While their return is official, one certainty remains: the couple will not resume the royal duties they vacated in 2020. Beyond that, significant questions remain unanswered.
The Context of Their Departure
The rift with the Royal Family emerged just two years after their highly publicized wedding, an event many hoped would modernize the traditional monarchy. For much of the British public, Meghan, a successful biracial American actress, represented a step toward a more contemporary institution.
However, intense and often hostile tabloid scrutiny fueled tensions between the couple and the Palace. In January 2020, they announced their intention to “step back” from official duties to pursue a more independent life between the UK and the US, aiming to define a new role within the monarchy.
At the time, Queen Elizabeth II expressed her support for their desire to build a life as a young family, noting that while the monarchy would have preferred them to remain full-time working royals, she respected their wish for independence.
As part of the separation, Buckingham Palace confirmed the couple would cease using their most senior titles, relinquish state funding, and repay approximately $3 million used for their official residence’s refurbishment.
Status of Family Relations
Relationships remain fractured. The fallout from their departure, colloquially termed “Megxit,” brought renewed scrutiny to the Palace.
The couple has been vocal about their grievances. During a 2021 interview with Oprah Winfrey, Meghan discussed concerns regarding racial bias within the royal household and her mental health struggles. In late 2022, a Netflix docuseries further detailed their experiences, followed by Prince Harry’s memoir, “Spare,” in which he shared personal accounts of family friction, including an alleged physical altercation with Prince William.
The tension with Prince William has reportedly remained high, and a previous visit by Harry to the UK did not result in a reconciliation. However, King Charles III has reportedly been informed of Harry’s decision to return.
Motivations for the Return
The reasons for the timing of this move are not entirely clear, though King Charles III’s cancer diagnosis in early 2024 may be a factor. In a recent BBC interview, Harry expressed a profound desire for reconciliation, citing the preciousness of time given his father’s health.
There appear to be signs of healing between Harry and the King; the two met for tea in London last September, and the Sussexes recently met with both the King and Queen Camilla, bringing their children for a reunion after several years.
Future Plans and Professional Life
The children have already been enrolled in school, prepared to begin in September. Regarding professional endeavors, while Harry and Meghan will not resume royal duties, they remain financially secure, with an estimated net worth of $60 million and existing agreements such as their Netflix deal.
It remains uncertain where they will reside, though they are unlikely to occupy royal accommodations since they no longer hold official roles.
Security Considerations
Security remains a primary concern. Historically, Harry has criticized the Palace for failing to provide armed protection to his family in the UK. While there were reports that security arrangements were under review, the specific details of their protection remain unclear. Prime Minister Andy Burnham recently characterized the couple’s security as a “private matter.”
While Harry’s long-running legal battles with British tabloids have concluded, their return to the UK is expected to attract significant media attention.
