The World Sevens Football tournament was established by American entrepreneurs Jennifer Mackesy and Justin Fishkin, with Mackesy holding a minority ownership stake in Chelsea Women and serving as co-owner of the National Women’s Soccer League’s Gotham FC.
Prize pools have varied across editions: prior tournaments in Estoril and Fort Lauderdale featured $5m (£3.76m) distributed among eight teams, while this year’s competition will offer $1.5m (£1.1m). The champions will claim $500,000 (£372,000), with runners-up receiving $250,000 (£186,000).
By comparison, Bayern Munich secured £1.8m ($2.5m) in prize money during the inaugural event. For teams reaching the top four, prize funds are divided equally, with 50% legally required to be allocated directly to players and staff, and the remaining portion available for club discretion.
